Unlike every other year, we had trouble deciding on a theme for Laura's party this time. Suddenly it was January and we needed to get invites out! We debated about a Monster High "fearleading" party, a tea party, or possibly a Moana party, but we eventually settled on a fairy party. I have several Pinterest boards full of ideas for party themes that seem fun, one of which is a fairy party, so I was partial to that theme. A friend of mine was looking for theme ideas for her daughter last summer, and I suggested the fairy theme because, at the time, I didn't foresee my girls wanting a fairy party. However, Laura eventually settled on the fairy theme because we randomly ended up reading the Disney Fairies book series over the last couple of months.
My friend had done some fairy crafts at their party (decorating wands and fairy houses), and I didn't want to copy her party exactly, so we had to come up with some new activities. That was when we decided to combine one of our other ideas and make it into a fairy tea party. We decided that Grandma could help make fairy costumes for our friends if we didn't have too many guests, and we could do a fairy photoshoot along with the tea party. We also decided to decorate frames to put pictures in from the photoshoot.
Grandma and I spent two weekends in January at her house designing and sewing fairy dresses after all of Disney's Pixie Hollow fairies. Josh needed those weekends to work on music, anyway, to make some extra cash for our upcoming Disney cruise, so it worked out well. We were able to find fabric in my mom's stash for all of the dresses except one, so it didn't end up costing us much, either.
Josh has recently moved his recording gear out of our basement, as he is renting a separate studio space now. So we have our rec room back! I spent a few evenings crafting tissue flowers for decorations to spruce it up, and set up a photo backdrop for the photoshoot in the playroom.
I also whipped up some red toadstool cushions with more fabric from my mom's stash to go along with our toadstool tea table. I had been eyeing a green shag carpet for Rachel's bedroom, and realized that it would be perfect "grass" for under the table, so decided to buy it since I had use for it afterward, too. I only regret it wasn't a little bigger. Laura had said she wanted the colour scheme of the party to be green, purple and blue, so I had thought about having a purple tablecloth for the tea table, but she said she wanted the table to be a red toadstool along with the cushions. Since the tablecloths are cheap, I bought both to see which looked better, and her vision was much better than mine this time! The toadstool table was one of my favourite parts - I'm so glad she suggested it.
We also had one corner of the rec room as the "pixie parlour" where the girls got to choose their costume (we made them with elasticized backs so they would fit a bigger range) and then a little fairy make-up for the photoshoot. Josh drew the sign for the pixie parlour and I used an old mirror and put twinkle lights around it to jazz it up a bit.
The girls arrived one by one and chose their costumes - conveniently they each ended up choosing the costumes I had hoped they would! They got changed and got a little fairy dust sparkle for their faces and then we started the photoshoot. We were down one fairy because one little girl couldn't make it last minute, but it still turned out cute and they all had lots of fun posing like fairies and blowing pixie dust. (This party just made my heart sing. So fun to be a part of!)
After we were done pictures, it was time for tea. For our tablescape this time, Laura and I decided we should put up the "Home Tree" from the books, where all the fairies live. Under it we created a sort of woodland scene, including her birthday cake, which we modeled after a tree stump. I wasn't sure how well the cake would turn out, but it ended up surpassing my expectations. Gotta love that. Laura has also decided she doesn't really like cake, so we made the "cake" out of rice krispy treats, which was much easier to work with. My mom bought the fairy figures for me to put on the cake (she was a really big help for this party!). I also found a ceramic dove at the dollar store, which I thought would work well as Mother Dove from the books, much to Laura's delight. Other items on the tablescape were fairy houses that we previously owned/ made, and ceramic fairies modeled after Mary Cicely Barker's Flower Fairies that my mom had given to me as gifts (I love love love Mary Cicely Barker's Flower Fairies!) and some moss, pinecones and flowers Laura had helped me pick out from the dollar store.
On the menu was:
- butterfly-shaped cucumber and cream cheese finger sandwiches
- "fairy bread" as per the Australian birthday party staple
(bread with butter and sprinkles, which were also cut in the shape of butterflies) - mini savoury cupcakes (cornbread with red pepper jelly icing)
- mini quiches (that I had intended to make flower shaped, but didn't end up happening)
- blackberries and "toadstools" (raspberries with marshmallow stems)
- meringue mushrooms
- carrot flowers
- "hedgehog" cheese ball with crackers
and then we had two kinds of tea and hot chocolate on the tea table with various fixins (milk, honey, whipped cream, marshmallows, and sprinkles). The girls loved all the fixins for the drinks, and made short work of the berries, "toadstools", and meringue mushrooms.
After the girls had eaten and we had done the cake, Josh ran out to print pictures for the guests to put in frames. While he was gone, the girls had fun decorating frames with various fairy items (feathers, shells, leaves, flowers, butterflies, "dew drops", and, of course, sparkles). Unfortunately, the frames weren't dry when it was time to go, so they had to be carried carefully, but it wasn't a huge deal. We let the girls take home their costumes and their wings, as well, which they seemed pleased about. :)
Overall, I would say I put a little less effort into this party than I typically do, but I thought it still turned out pretty cute and fun. The only thing that could have made it better was if we were able to have it outside in the real woods!)Alas, February is not particularly conducive to that, and neither is our current location. But the girls had a blast, anyway, which is the most important thing. <3
